With over 30 years of experience working with specialised paint coating systems, Andrew Parkinson (Parky) set to work designing paint specifically for the marine industry, focusing on yacht sails and inflatable boats. The primary issue Parky identified was the damage caused by UV, especially the breakdown of the material, and excessive fading of colours. To combat this, Parky developed a flexible paint coating system that is tough, flexible, and packed with UV inhibitors, absorbers and UV light scatterers.
Marine Shield Ultimate Flexible UV Paint Coating System balances robustness with flexibility. The product is soft, flexible and elastic enough to allow fibre movement within the sail/material. While being tough enough to withstand the considerable wear and tear, a yacht sail or inflatable boat must endure being out in the elements, whilst ensuring the paint would adhere to a wide range of substrates. An advantage to conducting this research and development in New Zealand is that it is renowned for having one of the highest UV levels in the world.
To date some of the largest companies in the marine industry have recognised the benefits of using Marine Shield products. e.g. it has hydrophobic along with mould/algae/fungi resistant properties. Rigorous testing by Marine Shield and independent companies worldwide over many years in laboratories and in the field has shown its worth. It is also worth mentioning that it has also been recognised and used at America’s Cup level.
In 2023 Marine Shield products have undergone an upgrade and name re-branding; the same unique qualities are still there that have ensured their use from simple yacht tenders to large super yacht sails. Parky has now refined all his research and development into 3 fantastic products.
